Massive growth from regional carriers, which is predicted to
need 8,000 additional pilots by 2025, and with more than US $ 80
billion being invested in GC aerospace infrastructure, demand
for skilled aviation professionals is at an all time high in the
Middle East.
Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the UAE , has launched a
new pilot training initiative to ensure it will not be caught short
of pilots as it expands in the future.
"Horizon, which has over 90 percent UAE national enrolment, is
now planning a major recruitment drive to increase programme
uptake rates and meet increasing demand. The Academy is noted
for its rapid expansion and we will continue to keep up with the
pace. Our Expansion Plans for the coming five years will see our
capacity doubled." Mohammed Humaidan Al Zaabi, General
Manager, Horizon International Flight Academy.
CAE is growing its pilot provisioning initiative to address the global
pilot shortage. The company has signed agreements to source,
recruit, and train more than 600 candidate pilots for Jazeera
Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and Wizz Air over a four year period.
"The local fleet is expected to grow by 600 aircraft over the next 20
years according to Boeing, which means that around 4800 extra
pilots need to be recruited or trained. Emirates has 1200 pilots
from 60-plus countries and is looking to double this number by
2012. It is aiming to recruit 200 pilots this year and 300 next year"

The UAE Air Force is getting ready to select new platforms for its
basic and lead-in fighter trainers. They plan to order around 24
lead-in trainers and between 30 and 40 basic trainers.
Most countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have urgent needs
to improve national-level crisis management capabilities and some
have recently set up emergency response centres. The market for
crisis management training in various branches of government,
civil defence and security agencies is picking up quickly..
The Iraqi Armed Forces is being rebuilt from scratch, entailing
extensive training for land and air forces. Billions of dollars have
been allocated to new defence systems, including basic trainer
and lead-in jet trainers.
The Royal Saudi Air Force, which has recently procured the Typhoon
jetfighters, is looking for lead-in trainers for fifth generation fighters
to fulfil future needs.
